Senior Data Science/AI Expert (Chief Scientific Officer)
We are an innovative start-up on a mission to protect and accelerate ocean health and marine science. To accurately and frequently monitor the performance of ocean projects, we are developing unique hardware and software. Our offering is a combination of autonomous, low maintenance, and
connected underwater cameras, and our cloud-based AI technology that analyses images
captured by the cameras and yields reliable biodiversity metrics. To join us in our mission we are
looking for a Senior Data Science/AI Expert (Chief Scientific Officer).
In this role you will be responsible for various technical and commercial activities needed in succeeding in our mission. This includes managing teams, pitching for projects, developing cameras and consensus building. Among other tasks, your role encompasses:
- Building and leading a team of ambitious data scientists and machine learning experts
- Collaborate with the leadership team in setting and driving organisational vision, operational, scientific and technical strategy, and hiring levels
- Leading the design and development of ecological metrics in collaboration with academic partners
- Guiding and overseeing the development of time-series analysis protocols and machine
learning workflows - Building collaborations and leading consensus-building with academic partners abroad
- Liaising with marine conservation stakeholders
- Building and maintaining trusting relationships with key customers, clients, partners, and
stakeholders - Collaborating with management and other stakeholders to raise capital and carry out other business-expanding strategies
- Leading grant application writing for funding sources both within Switzerland (in English) and in
native English speaking countries abroad
Your skills and experiences
- Outstanding problem solving skills
- Strong grounding in a core quantitative science (PhD in physics, mathematics,
computer science or equivalent) - At least 5 years postdoctoral research experience
- Demonstrated experience with ecological time-series analysis
- Demonstrated experience with designing and prototyping underwater computer vision
systems in novel environments - Demonstrated experience with nonlinear causal inference methods, particularly
empirical dynamic modelling - Direct professional connections to globally leading oceanographic and aquatic research
institutions - C2 or native-level English
- Excellent writing skills
- Collaborative skills, resilience, and a pragmatic and objective approach to challenges
